Irina Bokova has been the Director-General of UNESCO since 2009, and was successfully reelected for a second term in 2013. She is the first woman and the first Eastern European to lead the organisation. As Director-General of UNESCO, she is a leading advocate for ensuring quality education for all, gender equality, protection of cultural heritage, enabling scientific cooperation for sustainable development and promoting freedom of expression.
